1/30/25 We had a rainy Thursday in January and could not play outside, so Mike Kessling invited us to his house to have some fun with his new golf simulator. This setup was amazing and was a lot more fun that anyone imagined. Of course, Mike got the best scores, and yours truly had the lowest scores. But the real surprise was Jack! Sleeper. Thanks, Mike, that was a hoot. I hope you don’t find Billy down there at 3 am some night claiming it’s rehab.
1/17/25 – After way too much snow and freezing weather, we ended up with a balmy 28 degree Thursday evening for our first annual Freezer Bowl: Tournament of Fools. Our amazing facilities manager spent many hours shoveling to clear the snow and ice, but it was well worth the effort. We had seven teams of very hardy men ready to compete in the frigid Midwest weather. One of the best players was off his game (name withheld, probably exhausted from shoveling) which allowed Mark and Donovan to prevail and win the tournament. Great job guys! So glad Susan bundled you up properly Mark. The best part of the evening was seeing Bill back in perfect form and playing as average as he always has. So great to have you back Bill! Really made the night special.
Sour note: Steve Miller did not show up and did not arrange for someone else to deliver his half of the prize, so the winners had to share one bottle of very familiar-looking bourbon (check the Christmas post). This is very bad form, Steve.
Everyone had such a great time this will have to be an annual tradition; cold, lousy weather permitting.
Thanks to Mike, Dan, Dirc and Wally for contributing tanks and heaters.
1/2/25 – We started off 2025 with a real bang. First game of the evening, Jack and George Shicked Zach and his brother Mason. Then they Shicked Wally and Doc Schweitzer. Then they Shicked Bryan and Mike! Budda bing, badda boom. Fun – but cold start to 2025. We have way too much fun on Thursday’s.
12/19/24 – Once again we had our annual Christmas Spectacular and Beer Exchange at the JLC Corndome. We had 19 people show up and 16 of them competed in the tournament. The tournament was won by Dan Orem and Steve Miller. Dan and Steve beat George and Muff in the first round. But George and Muff easily defeated all the teams in the losers bracket and came back to challenge Dan and Steve. George and Muff won the first game but Dan and Steve came back hard and won the last game and the tournament. Notice I didn’t say anything bad about Muff. And BTW I was playing with debilitating hiccups from drinking a cranberry sparkling at Jeff Ruby’s
Great competition and lots of fun. So now Dan Orem has the Shick can and the holdiay trophy! Go figure.
We had way too much food and lots of fun beer to try.
Although he didn’t play, we were very happy to see Bill on his feet and looking good. That’s the best Christmas present ever!
11/9/24 Eric organized a fun Saturday at Elk Creek Hunt Club shooting clays. We had a great time killing lots of orange, clay pigeons- poor things. Eric, Steve, and Zach supplied the guns and the rest of us inexperienced shooters supplied the comedic relief, embarrassment, and frustration. Zach did a nice job of coaching us newbies! Steve supplied a few hunting vests and a little bravado – thanks Dad!
We did 12 stations, 100 shots total. Scores:
Zach – 78
Steve Miller- 72
Eric – 63
—-Inexperienced below this line—
Muff – 54 – beginners luck.
George – 44
Bryan – 24
Dan O. – 23 most improved ( left eye, right eye switcher)
Mike K – 0 ( if he had been there, score predicted by ChatGPT).
10/24/24 – What an end to a long, dry summer! Last night we had our 16th annual Fall Toss Off tournament of champions. The weather was perfect for some fall cornhole. We had six very competitive teams that were pretty well balanced. Every team had a shot to win the tournament. Even those that don’t play regularly, but have the audacity to show up for tournaments thought they could win. The Donovan/George team prevaled by not losing a single game. Looks like George has won the last three tournaments. Three peat! Is a four peat possible?
No shicks but plenty of shots!
Thanks again to the facilities manager for restoring the grass that had been damaged due to hot, dry weather and regular foot traffic. The sod is looking good. Outstanding job! Everyone in the group truly appreciates your dedication and countless hours of effort in maintaining the field in excellent condition.
Can’t wait for the Christmas Spectacular! Currently scheduled for December 19th.
7/24/24 So this week Bruce had the first pony of his life. We were so excited for him we all took a shot of Yucca. He stayed on the winners boards most of the night. Truly amazing. Go Bruce.
Last night we had our annual Tournament of Champions Sweet 16 competition. Hard to believe we’ve been playing cornhole every Thursday evening for 16 years! We had six teams, a bit light since some people seem to think there are other things to do in life besides play cornhole. I can’t imagine.
Dirc and Wally were the projected favorites but lost the first game and had to work their way back from the losers bracket. Ultimately, Mark and George defeated them for the prizes—some mighty fine Bardstown Bourbon!
New 16th anniversary ball caps were also distributed, designed by Steve Hensley at Egelston Maynard. Very stylish!
During the evening, we heard several coyotes howling just over the fence. They seemed very close and kind of alarmed us, but we kept playing despite the potential threat. Fortunately they turned out to be a local mutant breed called ICOtec gc300. Harmless but very annoying. They are safely locked away so they won’t annoy anyone ever again.
We have way too much fun on Thursdays!
Handsome guy on the left might be a repeat winner! This bracket is a mess because our illustrious former athletic director was not here to guide us.Local Mutant CoyotesNice job Hens!
4/19/24 – After 3 weeks of rainy Thursday’s we had one of the nicest days for our annual Spring Fling corn hole tournament, 75 degrees and 37% humidity. We had brand new bags, courtesy of the facilities manager, but the decision was made not to use them because they were fast and the lower skilled players would have a hard time scoring with them. So we used the old, worn out, broken in, floppy bags that practically slither into the holes on their own.
There were 8 teams just burning to win. We have never before had this level of competitive furor! Mike Kessling and I battled it out with Brad Bardo and Zach Hurt who came up from the losers bracket to challenge us, but lost the 2nd game in a hot 2 point match. Zach was on fire but it just wasn’t enough. Better luck next time, guys. Thanks to everyone who cheered for Brad, it really made him feel better about himself. He’s really quite fragile. Congratulations to Mike; this was a first-time tourney win for him, and my first since the Fall Toss Off of 2021.
Also thanks to the facilities manager for restoring the grass which had been destroyed in the fall from the hot dry weather and weekly foot traffic. Excellent work. Everyone in the group really appreciates your countless hours of hard work keeping the field in top condition.
Up next – 16th Anniversary Tournament of Champions; with new bags.
We have way too much fun on Thursdays!
Last minute update…shout out to Steve Hensley for recovering from his surgery and throwing after a long hiatus. El Diablo is back…almost.
